Mullet Run Community BBQ Lunch

Each year, excitement builds as mullet season approaches. To mark the occasion, TUC recently hosted a community gathering, where mullet fillets hit the BBQ, served up with generous helpings of lemon wedges, chips, and salad.

The annual mullet run takes place around ANZAC Day, when the weather begins to cool and southerly winds sweep in. During this time, mullet leave the estuaries in large schools, heading north along the coastline to spawn.

For generations, Biripi people have read the signs of nature to prepare for the mullet run. These signs include hairy grubs forming lines as they move through the bush, and paperbark trees bursting into bloom. In our region, some of the best places to witness the mullet run are Crowdy Head, Black Head, and Tuncurry.
