Biripi elder Pastor Russell Saunders OAM is encouraging more MidCoast indigenous youth to take up tertiary study.
Pastor Saunders who is being appointed to the Taree Universities Campus (TUC) Board on Wednesday 21st July, said he strongly supported opening up more educational opportunities.
“It’s an honour to be on the Board of Taree Universities Campus. I hope I can bring encouragement and good ideas for aboriginal growth and connection,” Pastor Saunders said.
TUC Chair Alison McIntosh said she was delighted to welcome Pastor Saunders onto the Board.
“Russell is a distinguished elder of the Biripi nation and has had a long history of involvement with education locally through our schools, particularly Taree High School.
“Russell’s wisdom, knowledge and connections are greatly welcomed by TUC members who voted unanimously to invite him onto the Board,” Dr McIntosh said.
Board member Maurie Stack said the appointment would have great personal significance for Russell.
“I remember Russell as a shy five-year-old member of the Biripi people, crossing the Manning River to attend primary school in Taree.
“Russell’s connection to community will be invaluable in communicating the opportunities of the Taree Campus,” Mr Stack said.
